TOLL TRANZ LINK
Overview
Toll Tranz Link is a freight forwarding business, and move countless tonnes of chilled, frozen and dry goods across land, sea and air. The business has 600 employees and 400 contractors working in 34 branches throughout the country, providing service to more than 4,000 customers and operating a fleet of more than 380 road vehicles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The productivity challenge
Toll Tranz Link is one of New Zealand's largest and most competitive freight forwarding businesses. In 2001, however, things were a very different story. The business had never made a true profit in its history and faced an uncertain future. A new senior management team was recruited to implement a blunt brief: turn the business around, or it has to go.
The productivity achievement
The new Toll Tranz Link management team developed a change strategy to turn the business around. This included new leadership, a new business structure, and new technology, equipment, training and workplace practices to improve productivity and profitability. The outcome has been impressive:
- the number of on-time, undamaged deliveries rose by a massive 55 percent
- Toll Tranz Link's customer base stabilised, and is growing at about 6 to 8 percent per annum
- the business is no longer a loss-maker, and its activities now make a significant financial contribution to the Toll New Zealand operation
- employees enjoy working for an efficient, organised company and staff turnover has reduced.
