Stephen Bevan, The Work Foundation UK, visits New Zealand

The Workplace Productivity Agenda and DoL’s Partnership Resource Centre sponsored the recent visit of prominent UK researcher Stephen Bevan in mid-November 2006. 

Since 2002, Stephen has been Director of Research at The Work Foundation. He is responsible for the delivery of a programme of both applied and frontier research on the world of work. These include programmes of work on The Knowledge Economy, High Performance Workplaces, Public Value and Labour Market Disadvantage. With a team of 12 researchers, he oversees a programme of over 20 research studies each year, each designed to enhance the UK’s evidence-base and to inform the climate of policy debate in the UK’s Boardrooms and the UK Government.

 

Areas of Expertise

Stephen’s primary areas of expertise include:

 

  1. Labour Market Dynamics – including recruitment, retention, and labour mobility.
  2. High Performance Workplaces – including strategic HR management, organisation design, job design, motivation & engagement.
  3. Reward Strategy – including pay system design, pay comparability, performance-related pay, team pay and bonus schemes.
  4. Health at Work – including absence management, mental health at work, health promotion.
  5. Employee Relations – including collective bargaining, partnership working, conciliation and mediation in dispute resolution.
  6. Work-Life Balance – including flexible working, equality of opportunity, gender and career development.
  7. The Knowledge Economy – changing patterns of work and the workforce

 

Relevance to New Zealand’s labour market situation

This visit builds on the Department of Labour’s on-going work on developing links with international organisations and agencies who are working to improve productivity and to ensure that practices being undertaken in New Zealand reflect international best practice. This visit also supports the activity of the ongoing tripartite (Government, Business NZ and NZCTU) project.
